Day 6: Custom Made

Now that is a Sombrero

For class today the boys were supposed to have completed their third journal entry, and they all not only completed their assignment but also wrote very solid journal entries about their experience so far in Esteli.  Sr. Rivera reviewed the journals while Sr. Monahan and I reviewed "gustar" verbs and accent rules -- believe it or not, accents are not randomly added to Spanish words to torture Spanish students.

After class the boys went home for lunch and some family time before we met up to go to the Aldea.  Being the third day of teaching, the boys continued to explore creative methods of teaching by coming up with some interactive manipulatives and creative uses of space.  My camera had not charged properly, so I was unable to take pictures.  It was unanimous, after class the boys said that today was their best day teaching, and they piled into the bus full of energy and excitement.

From the Aldea we went to a shop that specializes in making custom boots, shoes, and belts to order.  In most of those exclusive magazines, you can send in an outline of your foot to some small shop in Italy where, for a couple grand they will make you a pair of custom made boots or shoes, but here in Esteli we can get even more customized leather goods for a fraction of that price.  The boys were very excited, and four of them decided to get boots, and a couple of them got belts.

Tomorrow we will visit a coffee plantation where the boys will learn all about the coffee making process and see it for themselves.  Then we will go to Drew Estate where they will learn all about the unique cigar making process before going to Sr. Rivera's house where we will have a cook out and enjoy his pool.
