Day 9: Somoto

Early this morning we packed into the bus and drove north to Somoto where we hiked some trails that took us up into the canyon.  Once we came out into the canyon, the boys were thrilled to find out we were going to float down the river, jump from the cliffs, and ride the rapids.  It had rained not only the day before but for the past two months (this is the rainy season), so the canyon was in perfect condition.  I did not get to take as many pictures as I would have liked because my camera spent a lot of time in a ziploc bag in the dry box, but I did manage to take a few.  Nothing can really capture the grandeur of the canyon except maybe the looks on the boys' faces.

The entrance

Today was the first day this year there was enough rain for that cascade to form

They look like pros

After our tour, we went to a restaurant for the boys to enjoy a typical dish called Chancho con Yuka.  It is pork and yuka (a vegetable that is similar to a potato only sweeter) served with slaw.

On the ride back to Esteli the boys slept the entire way!
